Fun for Everyone….not just families!
This is a simple ‘Score Orienteering; event suitable for every speed and ability. Whether you are a total beginner or a more experienced navigator this two hour event will give you a buzz.
‘Score-O’ means you have a set amount of time (two hours in this case) to go and find as many ‘controls’ as you can in that time. Each control has a value – say 10, 20 or 30 points, depending on how far away they are. The winners are those with the highest score, so not necessarily the fastest or fittest people.
Just don’t be late back as penalties are applied.
Each control is a large easily identified ‘feature’, aka a ‘gate’, bridge over stream, footpath sign, etc. so easy to spot and no searching about in the undergrowth!
Therefore the real requirement is simple ‘orienteering’ from control to control.
Why are we doing this? We want to dispel the myth that navigation is difficult and Orienteering a fun sport.
We’ll give you the chance to stretch yourselves a little out of your comfort zone. Don’t be scared, don’t be intimidated.
There will be two maps; one aimed at families and our younger adventurers – think cartoon / sketch type map, and a proper 1:25k scale OS map (that’s the normal walking running map) for more mature and competent.
You can ramble around as a family group, following your Youngest Adventurer, or race around as a good workout of you wish. Or simply enjoy a good ‘walk-with-a-purpose’ with a friend.
Help and advice will be on hand and it really is easy. The area used will be no more than a couple of miles radius from the Stickle Barn, so not too high or remote fell top terrain.
Cost – £10:00 per map/family – either type. Share a map or race a friend. Remember all proceeds go to our nominated charities!
You will need walking / running shoes and clothing, and probably a water resistant jacket. Maps supplied – compasses for loan.
