Following the success of our inaugural event in January 2016 the ‘Grand Day Out’ is now in the process of becoming a registered charity. We will concentrate our activities on supporting communities in areas of Cumbria affected by recent flooding events, and those likely to be impacted by similar events in the future.
In order to achieve this, the Grand Day Out will organise a range of coordinated events which provide a way for people of all ages and abilities enjoy the Cumbrian outdoors, culture and hospitality. Events will include outdoor running and cycling races, guided walks, skills sessions, outdoor workshops and community based activities. The purpose of these events will be three-fold:
1) to encourage people to take part in health promoting, sociable and community based activities;
2) to fundraise for projects that will directly help to rebuild and promote the future resilience of flood-affected communities across Cumbria and
3) to encourage people to come together to celebrate these communities and the county of Cumbria.
Participants of events will also be encouraged to further support the success of these projects through the donation of their time as part of a ‘time bank’ to ensure the long term viability of the projects. This donation of time will mean that the longer term human and physical capacity to deal with flooding (and other climate change issues) in future is enhanced and their impact is reduced.
